Start with the call flow
Before changing hardware or providers, document what should happen when someone calls the main number, a department, an extension or an after-hours line.
Check the network
Voice depends on predictable connectivity. Wireless, switching, routing, firewall behavior and internet performance can all influence call quality.
Separate symptoms from causes
Dropped calls, one-way audio and poor quality can have very different causes. Troubleshooting should follow the symptom to the underlying dependency.
Make changes understandable
A phone system should be documented well enough that another competent person can understand the configuration.
